FundaFighter.com is an MMA community hub and fundraising portal for fighters. The site supports them in the planning and execution of crowdfunding campaigns in which they solicit donations from fans in exchange for unique incentives like event tickets, autographs, fight-worn gear, or whatever rewards they are willing to give their backers. With a staff of business, PR, web and multi-media advisors, Fund a Fighter is aptly equipped to walk fighters through every step of the process from conception to campaign.
Inspired by Tanner’s simple idea, this exciting and groundbreaking initiative was developed by Tristar Gym owner and revered MMA trainer Firas Zahabi and noted Montreal based entrepreneurs Robbie Stein and Greg Hoffman. The goal of Fund a Fighter is simple: Provide fighters with an alternative means of raising money for their next MMA-related project, while giving fans an alternative way to interact and support their favorite fighters. Think of it like Kickstarter for MMA.
Zahabi thinks the new venture will change the landscape of the sport for the better, removing a lot of the financial roadblocks fighters face when preparing for fights, like affording travel, hiring coaches and making sure that their nutritional needs are being met. “This is the best thing to happen to MMA since Sherdog,” Zahabi said ahead of Tuesday’s launch. The company also announced +today that FAF’s first two approved fighters with active fundraising campaigns on the site are current UFC featherweight Joey Gambino and The Ultimate Fighter 13 veteran, welterweight standout Chuck “Cold Steel” O’Neil.
Gambino says that he believes that the concept is one that will take off once his peers realize the benefits. “Knowing that I won’t have to struggle financially to cover all of my expenses for my next training camp will be a huge weight off my shoulders. I’ll be training August, September and October and am hoping to fight at UFC 154 or another card in November and now I won’t have to worry about money for those three months if I can reach my goal. I used to have to bounce to pay my bills while I was in Montreal training and now I can just concentrate on preparing for my fights. Its awesome.”
O’Neil agrees with Gambino that FAF will make his life a lot more stress free and says another platform it will provide fighters with is an alternative conduit for them to help build their fan bases beyond social media sites like Twitter and Facebook.
“It’s a really cool way for us to interact with our fans. They’re such a huge part of our careers and their support is one of the things that drives us the most to succeed. Without fans buying tickets and paying for pay-per-views, we wouldn’t be able to do what we love,” O’Neil explains. “This is just another way for them to support us and for us to show our appreciation in which we all benefit.”
